We’ve now trained more than 1,000 people in Psychological First Aid so they can provide mental health support in their cyclone-affected communities now, and in the future. Pimia Wehi has been helping coordinate the ongoing recovery effort in Te Karaka, a small town near Gisborne where Cyclone Gabrielle damaged or destroyed one in five homes. “At the early stages of our recovery we knew that mental unwellness was starting to creep into our community. We didn’t really know what the Psychological First Aid training looked like, but for me, I knew that it was something that our people needed.” We provided free mental health training to nearly two dozen people in Te Karaka.
