Next Wednesday Webinar
Matthew Jackson qualified as a farrier originally but become more impressed by barefoot trimming as his experience grew. He studied the subject extensively and has so much to offer including ideas for those-who-aren’t-convinced-yet. Send your questions in advance and attend our webinar at 8 pm next Wednesday. There may be a chance to answer questions from the chat as well. Matthew suggested we have a phone chat as we haven’t actually met. An hour and a half later we were still talking horse feet … He’s a geek - which is always complimentary in IH terms as we all love our subjects here!

There are some draft notes I made for myself:
“Unless foals are running in rough terrain, they need to be trimmed regularly. One needs to ensure the length of wall doesn’t get too long and take the frog away from weightbearing. At no point should the foal or grown horse be sore after trimming.
It is important for the health of the hooves that horses are not shod too young. Even if you are ultimately going to be shoeing your horse for performance, shoeing should be delayed until the caudal (back of the hoof) has developed, this may be 5 years old or even later. If you have a younger horse under saddle, maybe you can consider starting with ‘tips’ or aluminium plate
