🍋 🍊 🥦 Dave's Market Update 🍐 🍓 🍏 This week, Dave says ... "We have a fabulous line of imperfect pinks in our NSW stores. What's wrong with them? They are a bit too big, so the supermarket's quality control won't accept them. What's right with them? We are selling them at 99 cents a kg, the price point 20 years ago. Another great line this week is our 500gm punnets of fresh Californian dates that are superb eating. I love removing the seed and filling them with my favourite blue cheese! Add a fire and a glass of red at the farm, and I am in heaven. The Queensland strawberries continue to come back in price, and that is dragging down the price of raspberries (not cheap but less than last week) and blueberries. Blood Oranges, all citrus (maybe not so much mandarins), apples and pears all remain well priced and at their peak quality. First mangoes are in the shops but might be a few days before they are ready to eat. I have one on the kitchen bench waiting to go! It’s all good news this week with veg prices continuing fall as the weather continues to warm up. This week, it is the highly publicised lettuce that has fallen in price. You will see lettuce prices halved what it was one week ago.. All Harris Farm stores have broccoli or broccolini on special, again at very reasonable prices. This week, imperfect parsnips are a bargain. Snow peas have been extremely dear and will be a quarter of the price they were a fortnight ago."

🍓 Dave's Pick of the Week 🍓 This week, Dave's pick is ... Qld Strawberries. "My pick this week is Queensland Strawberries. It looks like a fantastic time ahead for our Queensland strawberries. Dry weather, cool to cold nights, and now some good warm days coming on, with daytime temperatures moving to the twenties - all point to really good fruit. August is always the year's peak for strawberry sales, and this year will be no exception. Unlike summer strawberries, these winter berries eat fantastically, and the cool nights mean the fruit keeps really well. Fabulous for breakfast, to snack on through the day, or for dessert at night - they are my favourite winter fruit." HOW TO PICK The perfect strawberry should be fully coloured, firm, bright, plump, and shiny. Size plays no part in determining the perfect strawberry. Make sure the cap (calyx) is attached, green, and fresh-looking. HOW TO STORE Always keep your strawberries in the fridge, and I recommend only washing or removing the tops just before eating. Berries are best if they are taken out of the fridge half an hour before eating them.

🍎 🥔 🍌 Dave's market Update 🥑 🍄 🍊 This week, Dave says... "Now's the time to start thinking about what to fill the lunchbox with to prepare for back to school. Imperial mandarins are still the pick of the bunch. However, Hicksons and Murcotts are also excellent, juicy, and bursting with vitamins. Lunchbox-sized Gala apples are also fantastic now, guaranteed not to make their way back home in the bottom of the school bag. Excellent crops of bananas are still in good numbers. We're seeing no slowdown with Hass avocadoes - exceptionally well priced. Blood oranges are now in store. Not cheap, but delicious segmented or juiced. Celery is my pick of the bunched veggies this week. They are excellent quality and cheap. Perfect in a warm winter casserole or soup. New-season potatoes from South Australia are at their very best right now. All the pumpkins remain cheap and sweet. (Butter, salt, and rosemary - in that order!) Cup mushrooms are also great now. Maybe a winter mushroom risotto finished with Grana Padano. The delicate herbs and lettuces are still recovering from everything nature has thrown their way. A couple of sunny weeks should remedy that." - David Harris

🍎 🥝 🍊 Dave's Market Update 🍌 🍐 🥕 This week, Dave says... "Thank goodness the fruit situation is far better than vegetables. Bananas remain very well supplied and inexpensive. Murcott mandarins, usually best in mid-August and September, now have a newish sub-variety known as Royal Murcotts. They are fantastic to eat right now! Also, we are currently using imperials from southern districts, which are eating fantastically. Be wary of cheap imperials as most of these are end-of-season Queensland fruit, terrible to eat and won't keep. Ask your shop or supermarket (or look at the sticker) – it is time to buy only southern fruit. Navels and lemons are plentiful (the Imperfect Lemons are a real bargain). All pears and apples are good, and the kiwi gold is my pick of the fruit! I find it hard to believe, but it's even more challenging than last week in the vegetable category. Onions are still good value, as are pre-pack carrots in 1kg bags. Apart from that, we are pushing new season ginger at a great price in all our shops this week - I guess it's a spice. Still, it does fit the technical definition of a vegetable. This week's ginger is outstanding quality and far cheaper than it has been in recent times!" - David Harris

Our Imperfect Pick of the Week are delicious pears 🍐 Coming mainly from Shepparton in the Goulburn Valley, the pears are deliciously juicy and great buying! They're imperfect due to some scarring caused by the strong winds in growing areas, and are great for lunchboxes, add to salads or enjoy on their own!
