This PSA was created by students at Humber College for Dyslexia Canada.
"The main message is government action should be taken to organize screening processes as early as possible so that children with dyslexia can receive any assistance they need while growing up. My hope for people to take away from this is a general awareness and empathy for the issues people with dyslexia face when undiagnosed, as a way to insight action and change this in legislation. However, I would also like people to watch this PSA with an open mind and take away their own message. A message is always more powerful for the audience when they come to it on their own terms." - Michael R. Milson, director

📢 Attention Ontario! Universal Screening will be coming to your schools soon! 🏫🎒
The purpose of screening is not to label or ‘diagnose’ but rather to provide evidence-based results to help guide classroom instruction. By identifying students who are at risk of having dyslexia, schools and educators can ensure that they receive the extra support they need to succeed. Dyslexia Canada supports Universal Screening, as it aligns with our mission of empowering those with dyslexia.

The new language curriculum for Ontario schools comes into full force next month, thanks in part to our advocacy campaign. The Right to Read Inquiry by the Ontario Human Rights Commission published its report in 2022 and found that the province’s education framework was “failing to meet the needs of students with reading disabilities.”
As a result of the findings, the new curriculum will now:
🧮 End the three-cueing system based on a debunked 1967 academic theory
🖊️ Provide explicit and systematic instruction to build foundational skills in reading, writing & spelling
📊 Implement compulsory universal screening for kindergarten to Grade 2 children
