Inspiring Explorer, Kelly Davenport, a meteorologist with expedition partner, MetService, has provided a fascinating insight into the surprising weather occurrences the Trust’s Inspiring Explorers™ team encountered in South Georgia and how these impacted the team’s journey.
“The astonishing weather wonders of South Georgia Island were more acute than I could have imagined. When we crossed the Antarctic Convergence the sea temperature plummeted, and the cloud descended into a thick soup of fog. The murky weather in our first landing spot created a surreal backdrop where we met our king penguin and elephant seal friends. We experienced a close encounter with mid-latitude weather as a front passed through, treating us to our first blue skies in days. A howling northwester struck us in Drygalski Fjord, but we still got to experience 2000m high peaks rising straight out of the ocean with glaciers cascading down the cliffs. I’m not sure I will ever experience 10 metre swells again, but I feel lucky as my stomach was kind.”

Inspiring Explorer, Savannah de Vos, hosted an event on International Women's Day for a group of 19 women from 'Dear Community'. The objective of the event was to celebrate female achievement and to provide a platform to encourage others to self-reflect amidst tall poppy syndrome. Savannah spoke about the Inspiring Explorers Expedition™, to South Georgia and shared a photo album of images illustrating her experiences.
"It was an awesome event, and great exposure as none of the women who attended had heard of Antarctic Heritage Trust before," says Savannah.
