The current survival rate from a sudden cardiac arrest in Australia is below 5%. Every minute that passes without use of a defibrillator, the patient loses an additional 10% chance of survival. A defibrillator uses electricity to restart the heart in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest. Use of a defibrillator, in addition to effective CPR, can increase the patient's chance of survival up to 70%.
